Getting Started

The Resource Identification Portal was created to promote discovery, tracking and reuse of research resources. The portal offers a central location for obtaining and exploring Research Resource Identifiers (RRIDs) - persistent and unique identifiers for referencing a research resource. This portal relies on the good work of many community repositories such as MGI, Addgene, MMRRC, NCBI/EBI Biosamples, Cellosaurus and many more. These community databases govern the RRIDs of their type.

Some examples for different RRID types are shown below:

       Antibody: RRID:AB_90755

       Plasmid: RRID:Addgene_44362

       Organism: RRID:MMRRC_026409-UCD

       Cell Line: RRID:CVCL_1074

       Tool: RRID:SCR_003070

       Core facility: RRID:SCR_017934

       Biosamples: RRID:SAMN19842595

To ensure they are recognizable, unique, and traceable, identifiers are prefixed with " RRID: ", followed by a second tag that indicates the source authority that provided it (e.g. "AB" for the Antibody Registry, "CVCL" for the Cellosaurus, "MMRRC" for Mutant Mouse Regional Resource Centers, "SCR" for the SciCrunch registry of tools).

Entities not covered by RRIDs may be cited as follows:

  • Small molecules: Please use the PubChem SID (lookup here) citation instructions (here)
  • Proteins: Please use the UniprotKB ID (lookup here) citation instructions (here)

All other kits, molecules, and other entities not covered by RRIDs: Please use the following syntax:

  • Exact product name, Company Name, Catalog Number, Lot or Batch number
