Description: The goal of the Institute is to explore the interfaces of fundamental biological science, clinical science, and clinical care with a special emphasis on targeted cancer therapy. The current focus centers on signaling by protein kinases. These enzymes (protein kinases) play a key regulatory role in nearly every aspect of cell biology. Owing to the myriad actions of protein kinases, it is imperative that they be stringently regulated because aberrant activity of these enzymes can lead to a variety of diseases including, inter alia, cancer, diabetes and autoimmune, cardiovascular, degenerative, inflammatory, and nervous disorders. Because mutations and dysregulation of protein kinases play causal roles in human disease, these enzymes represent attractive drug targets. Our research focuses on the epidermal growth factor receptor protein-tyrosine kinase, Raf/Mek/Erk protein kinases, and on the regulation of tyrosine hydroxylase activity by protein phosphorylation. The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research is a Federal tax exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit organization incorporated in the State of North Carolina on 24 March 2006 (EIN 20-4665742; DLN 17053144012016).
